Tidal waves triggered by Japan tsunami triggersBusiness, Featured Wednesday, November 23rd, 2016
An earthquake with a 6.9-magnitude struck off Japan’s Honshu island triggering baby tsunami waves. It brought back traumatic memories of the 2011 Fukushima disaster. The quake struck Fukushima at about 6 am triggering initial warnings of nearly 10 foot high waves. Fortunately, the waves that hit the coast were much smaller. A tsunami warning was issued in Japan’s Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures, causing thousands to seek higher grounds. As of Wednesday 1.04 AM, the tsunami warning has been lifted and there were no casualties reported.
In contrast, the 2011 tsunami killed 18,000 people. It was one of the most powerful ever recorded. It also caused a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear power plant whose clean-up operation is still not even complete.
