Spain vs Argentina: Rafael Nadal To Spearhead SpainFeatured, Sports & Recreation Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011
The Davis Cup final will see a clash of the Titans typically known for soccer, only now on a tennis court where Spain meets Argentina. Spearheading Spain’s side will be Rafael Nadal while David Nalbandian will be Argentina’s flag bearer.
Spain sailed swiftly through the semi-finals when Nadal flagged off a 4-1 win against France, and he is now set to go head-to-head with Argentinian Nalbandian on the 2nd-4th of December when the finals are set to take place in Seville, at the Olympic Stadium.
Perhaps it wasn’t difficult for Albert Costa, Spain’s team captain, in coming up with a players list, gathering from their good performances.
For the singles match, Nadal, who is currently ranked 2nd in the world standings, will team up with David Ferrer who ranks a close 5th in the world’s top tennis players.
The doubles match will see Fernando Verdasco join hands with Feliciano Lopez for the Spanish team; while Marc Lopez is set to partner with Marcel Granollers, the winner of the Valencia Open.
On the other hand, Tito Vazquez, Argentina’s captain, is yet to downsize his team of 5 players to the required 4 players by 1st December. In addition to Nalbandian and Del Potro (ranks 11th), Argentina’s list of players also includes: Eduardo Schwank, Juan Ignacio Chela and Juan Monaco.
The semi-finals in Belgrade saw the Argentinian team defeat Serbia 3-2, when Novak Djokovic was forced to accept the defeat of his team whilst still nursing his injury.
