Big fat Sri Lankan wedding boasts 126 Bridesmaids
If the bride’s bouquet was thrown at the end of wedding, there were 126 ladies waiting to catch it. A Sri Lankan couple has broken the Guinness World Record for the most number of bridesmaids for a bride with an astounding 126 bridesmaids. The wedding was that of Nisansala who wed Nalin at a ceremony held in Negombo, Sri Lanka on 8th November 2013.
The record broke a similar one set in October 2012 in Bangkok, Thailand when a host of 95 bridesmaids were present at the wedding of businesswoman Keyoon Chokelamlert and her groom Kriangkrai Kittithanesuan, according to the World Record Academy.
The record set in Sri Lanka was a dream come true for Champi Siriwardana who is the sister of the bride as well as event coordinator and dress designer for the wedding. Champi is a well-known bridal gown designer in Sri Lanka; and at a press conference held before the big day was quoted to say that it was her dream to stage the record-breaking nuptials.
The 126 bridesmaids wore sarees in purple and gold with flowers in their hair. According to Reuters the wedding party also consisted of 25 best men, 20 page boys and 23 flower girls. The glamorous army of attendants are said to have gathered in a separate hall for the formalities of setting the record. The occasion was also graced by Sri Lanka’s First Lady, Shiranthi Rajapaksa, the wife of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The extravagance of the wedding has stirred up a lot of criticism on social media, with thousands of internet trolls expressing their views on alternative ways that the cost incurred for the wedding could have been spent. A minority however defends the couple’s right to hold their wedding in whichever manner they please.
