Beyoncé releases surprise albumEntertainment, Featured Sunday, December 15th, 2013
Singing sensation Beyoncé Knowles created a buzz on the internet and social media on Friday with the surprise unveiling of her fifth solo album on iTunes. The self-titled album was released as a surprise to fans and the entertainment world alike, with absolutely no pre-publicity.
The album features 14 new songs and 17 videos, filmed in various locations around the world. The album also includes a cameo by the star’s husband Jay-Z and their baby, Blue Ivy. Officially released exclusively on iTunes, it is said to have been downloaded a thousand times over already.
“I didn’t want to release my music the way I’ve done it. I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans,” said Beyoncé in the statement, adding “There’s so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans. I felt like I didn’t want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans.”
The album was a hot topic on twitter and other social media with a number of fellow pop stars tweeting their support and excitement about it.
Early Friday, Katy Perry tweeted, “Don’t talk to me today unless it’s about Beyonce THANX.”
An excited Demi Lovato, tweeted that she might possibly be obsessed with the star, adding “How is anyone not tweeting about Beyonce right now.”
Even Lady Gaga, took the time to acknowledge the unexpected release, tweeting “Welcome back Honey B we missed you.”
Beyoncé’s label Sony announced that hard copies of the album would be available in stores before Christmas.
In a video on her official Facebook page, Beyoncé calls the project a ‘visual album’. “It’s more than just what I hear,” she says. “When I’m connected to something, I immediately see a visual or a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies. And they’re all connected to the music.”
